About Scott

A piano is furniture until it is in tune. I have spent my working life around these instruments in central Pennsylvania, tuning by ear rather than by meter, and moving grands, uprights and player pianos that other movers will not touch. Some of the rooms I work in are living rooms. Some of them are opera stages.

The work is unglamorous and physical. A move starts with measuring doorways and finishes with the piano standing level in a room where somebody will actually play it. A tuning starts with listening to what the instrument has done since the last visit, and often ends with a small repair the owner did not know was needed.

Customers keep calling back because the same person answers the phone, quotes the job and shows up to do it. The Harrisburg Opera Association has used these services for more than twenty-five years, and the Artisan Guitar Show has worked with me across decades of performances. Their words are further down this page.

How a job goes

01

Call or text

Tell me what you have, where it lives, and what it needs. A few questions on the phone usually settle whether it is a tuning, a repair, or a move.

02

We set a time

I book by appointment, Monday through Saturday. For a move I ask about stairs, doorways, and where the piano is going, so the right equipment and crew come with me.

03

The work gets done

I tune by ear, repair what can be repaired, and wrap and dolly what has to travel. You are told what I find before anything is taken apart.

Customers from living rooms to opera stages

I have had the pleasure of working with Scott Portzline for over 25 years. He has diligently, efficiently and with great care and candor provided piano tuning and moving services for the arts organization that I serve - Harrisburg Opera Association. He is a consummate professional and a respected musician in his own right. I highly recommend him.
