A piano is furniture until it is in tune. I have spent my working life around these instruments in central Pennsylvania, tuning by ear rather than by meter, and moving grands, uprights and player pianos that other movers will not touch. Some of the rooms I work in are living rooms. Some of them are opera stages.
The work is unglamorous and physical. A move starts with measuring doorways and finishes with the piano standing level in a room where somebody will actually play it. A tuning starts with listening to what the instrument has done since the last visit, and often ends with a small repair the owner did not know was needed.
Customers keep calling back because the same person answers the phone, quotes the job and shows up to do it. The Harrisburg Opera Association has used these services for more than twenty-five years, and the Artisan Guitar Show has worked with me across decades of performances.
